another shadow in the dunes

I saw the dunes in the sangria de cristo mountains in Colorado. it was sunrise and i was there with my heart , alone, though i was accompanied by my companion . As the sun rose, i saw the footprints of critters and wild insects not seen elsewhere. suddenly, there were shadows standing tall over the mounds of the dunes, into the awakening canyons, and soaring again deeper into the eternity of time. there were two of us, but now there was another. it had leapt upon us, followed us in mad pursuit, mocking me, my dreams, my vainglorious attempt to stop the sands of time. if i could identify this vision, i could understand my place, my special place in the history of man. but the face was unknown, and the moment past as quickly as life. i thought of breakfast that day. of the guest i met who reminded me i was someone special. i know who that other shadow is, and i must give it form. i think, in a torrent, i will write about that spectre when what was real was not, and what was imagined was oh so much more. cheers to england. cheers to us all lonely creatures of the dunes.
